Is it true that taking atenolol 50mg for blood pressure will cause impotency and ED in the long run? I've been taking atenolol 50mg for about 1 year now. my BP reading is about 130/86 and sometimes (seldom) up to 140/90. I heard people talking about impotency and ED related to atenolol user. is it true? if true, is there any alternative medicine that is safer? Tq!!!

James W replied: "I take that much, every day for the last 15 years and everything works fine."

floonable replied: "First of all I'm going to assume you are under 30 yrs old, as ascertained by you only taking BP medication approximately one year. I have been taking lotensin 40mg for about five years now, maybe more. I also take Maxzide/ HCT 25/37.5mg. My BP numbers are within desireable limits as per my M.D.. However, I have had to get help for my resultant ED problems. If I had confronted my BP problems back when I was a teenager, like I should have, the treatment and any other issues could have been dealt with sooner. Seems that any blood pressure regulating medication (prescribed) carries with it the possibility of certain side effects. It is suggested that you should bring these and other issues to the front through open and honest dialogue with your doctor. Good Luck."

Atenolol 50mg/day and albuterol inhaler interactions? Hi everyone, I am currently on Atenolol 50mg/day for tachycardia and I also use an albuterol inhaler. I read online that it isn't recommended that I use both together? Why? Please explain if you know. Thank you!

greydoc6 replied: "Atenolol is a beta blocker. Beta blockers, also known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, are drugs that block norepinephrine and epinephrine (adrenaline) from binding to beta receptors on nerves. There are three types of beta receptors and they control several functions based on their in the body. They are primarily used to slow down the heart rate and to lower blood pressure by dilating the blood vessels. Albuterol is a beta 2 receptor agonist to relieve bronchospasm. The two drugs work at cross purposes and atenolol reduces the efficacy of albuterol."

Can Atenolol 50mg be taken with NyQuil? My father in law is taking the pre ion drug Atenolol 50mg. He has a cold and was needing to know if he could take NyQuil with them. Could someone please let me know?

algaemaster replied: "Don't see why not. Nyquil has a sedative effect but it should not efffect BP."

bana_q_wax replied: "I used to take atenolol because I have super ventricular tacchycardia and I've taken nyquil while taking it. I also used to drink heavily, sometimes taking a pill with beer instead of water, so he should be fine. I take toprol xl now because the atenolol started to affect my asthma real bad. I really wouldn't worry too much about it, but to be on the safe side ask his pharmacist or physician. They are really the only ones who know his history well enough to be qualified to give you a correct answer. Good Luck."

Atenolol 50mg this is makeing me tired, lightheaded I had a heartattach Atenolol was given to me starting with 25mg & it was increased to 50mg. Other than Atenolol what can be given in its place. This is too much for me. It makes me dizzy, legs feel week,I have no energy and I want to sleep all the time. I don't like this feeling of leslessness. What can the Doctor give me in place of the Atenolol that will NOT make feel this way. Any suggestions? Thank you,

jett727747 replied: "Atenolol is a beta blocker that lowers blood pressure, slows heart rate and is often used in post heart attack treatment and is usually well tolerated. The symptoms you describe are most likely a consequence of lowered blood pressure due to the atenolol -- reduced blood pressure is not a side effect but the desired result after someone has experienced a heart attack. However blood pressure should not be lowered to a degree that causes serious problems. If you just started this medication your symptoms may diminish with time, but if they haven't there is no reason other drug treatments can not be considered. One option is to ask your doctor if he can lower the dosage to 25mg, the lowest dosage available for this medication. Your doctor should be able to suggest other alternatives than atenolol - there are many medications that can be used for post heart attack management based on the severity and type of infarction, your current physical condition and what course of treatment your doctor has decided is best for you. You are taking a relatively small dosage of atenolol, so it's possible your symptoms are not medication related, consult with your md about this. DO NOT stop this medication without first consulting with your physician."

dcrc93 replied: "it could be to low of blood preasure see a doctor eat well and drink well untill then"

SZO replied: "Side effects found in patients taking atenolol are: dizziness, lightheadedness, excessive tiredness, cold hands and feet, upset stomach and diarrhea. Most people do not get these symptoms and the drug is quite safe for the treatment of hypertension. There are other beta-blockers in the market such as Propranolol, Metoprolol, etc. However, only your attending doctor can determine which drug would be best to replace atenolol."

hello i normally take apo atenolol 50mg? and just opened my Rx and found out I have ratio atenolol for my heart, i dont mind the change in name but the pill is twice the size yet i am supposed to take the whole pill? why is this? i am lethargic and wonder if it is twice the dose?

Tee replied: "I take atenolol too, but this sounds like a question for your doctor or pharmacist. Call them ASAP!"

Alena replied: "Check the content of the pills, not the size, because most pills have excipients (things that are not the active drug). If it still contains 50mg of atenolol (and I think it does) then it's OK. If it has 100mg or more, then take half the pill and ask your doctor."

dcrc93 replied: "let the doctor see it or drug store you bought it at to make sure"

mrdmd replied: "If you feel like it's affecting you differently, go by the pharmacist and talk to them about it. Also, this website may help you check to make sure you have the right pill. "

How long do side effects from Atenolol (a beta blocker) last? My husband was just started on Atenolol 50mg for Vasovagal Syncope, and is having reactions like diahrea, nausea, tiredness, dry eyes, etc. It says on the pamphlet these may occur, but it is enough to get him sent home from work. Does anyone have any info on this drug? Thanks!!

TONY replied: "Hello there, I have been taking Atenolol every day for the last 12 years since I had my first angioplasty. Luckily, I have had no side effects whatsoever. However, I was told at the time I was first prescribed it, that if I had any problems to let them know and they would give me an alternative beta blocker. Apparently there are several different drugs that can be used instead of Atenolol. Just ask your husband's cardiologist to put him on a different beta blocker.."

John N replied: "yeah, there are a lot of beta blockers out there, and they're not all the same. I don't tolerate some of them. He needs to see his doc and try a different one."

How long does it take for my blood pressure medication (Atenolol)to start working?? My doc just gave me a pre ion for Atenolol 50mg.Taken once a day.I just started this medication on Thursday but my blood pressure is still very high with no signs of decrease.Does this stuff take a while to start working or will my doc probably have to raise the dosage? Thanks.

Landon C replied: "i take 100mg ... and it started working in a few hrs."

Daniel replied: "You can expect the full effect on blood pressure after about 1-2 weeks. However, the blood pressure lowering effect of atenolol is limited and most patients need more than one medication to effectively treat hypertension. So, you might need to add another medication to reach your goal."

Is there a difference between Toprol XL and Atenolol ? This may sound like a stupid question but just out of curiousity does anyone know if someone taking Atenolol 50mg can take half of a Toprol XL100mg tablet in substitute for a day or two. If not what are the differences of the two medicines because a friend told me that they both work the same way. Thanks in advanced

oplsjames replied: "Yes. Atenolol is the generic version of the medication that is NOT time-released. Toprol XL is the timed release version of the same medication. DO NOT CUT, BREAK OR CRUSH TOPROL XL for any reason. It will release the medication in an irregular, unpredictable fashion and could be dangerous."

rod85 replied: "The answer given above is incorrect. Atenolol is NOT the generic form of Toprol XL. The generic form of Toprol and Toprol XL is lopressor. Atenolol is the generic form of Tenormin. Atenolol and lopressor are both a class of drugs known as beta blockers. However, they are NOT the same drugs. So they are not interchangeable on a milligram per milligram basis. The following is from medicinenet.com: "Atenolol is prescribed for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension), used to treat chest pain (angina pectoris) related to coronary artery disease, and is also useful in slowing and regulating certain types of abnormally rapid heart rates (tachycardias). Other uses for atenolol include the prevention of migraine headaches and the treatment of certain types of tremors (familial or hereditary essential tremors)." "Metoprolol is prescribed for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension), used to treat chest pain (angina pectoris) related to coronary artery disease, and is also useful in slowing and regulating certain types of abnormally rapid heart rates (tachycardias). Other uses for Metoprolol include the prevention of migraine headaches and the treatment of certain types of tremors (familial or hereditary essential tremors)." The de ions are nearly identical. However, individuals may tolerate drug one better than another with fewer undesireable side effects. I am a physician."

heartman1122 replied: "Both medicines are long acting beta blockers. Atenolol is the most prescibed beta blocker in the US. Differences include: Atenolol is less expensive. Toprol is not cleared by the kidneys (very important when deciding on the which medication to use). Toprol has better data for use with heart failure patients. Both are drugs are good medications. Yes you can take toprol in place of atenolol IF NEEDED. I would speak with your MD before making any decisions (your medical histroy is important in making decisions like these)."

mutantalbino replied: "Just as a data point, the following was just shipped to me as a genric for Toprol XL "METROPROLOL SUCC ER 25MG TASAN""

Alcohol and Atenolol 50mg? Is it okay to drink alcohol while taking 50mgs of atenolol a day? I'm taking it for long qt syndrome

Balu replied: "One or two peg is ok best is avoid to drink with any heart medicine"

gangadharan nair replied: "Whilst atenolol, the most widely used -blocker in the United Kingdom, was once first-line treatment for hypertension, the role for -blockers in hypertension was downgraded in June 2006 in the United Kingdom to fourth-line as they perform less well than other drugs, particularly in the elderly, and there is increasing evidence that the most frequently used -blockers at usual doses carry an unacceptable risk of provoking type 2 diabetes. Consult your doctor or a pharmacist regarding your doubt."

ejbuttons replied: "not advised, talk to your doctor and he could let you know better. trust me the more honest you are the better he can help you"

Dr Frank replied: "There is no interaction."
