Claritin And Zyrtec in Q&A
What do you like better Claritin or Zyrtec? I'm taking Zyrtec for allergies right now but I think it's making me too tired so I'm thinking of switching to Claritin. Have you tried either or both medications? Which do you think is better overall considering both effectiveness and side effects?

dtoys5 replied: "I think Zyrtec is better although the side effects takes awhile to get used to..I didnt like Claritin because I had the shakes all the time and couldnt sleep for days..Maybe try counting the pill in half and be sure to drink alot."

claire d replied: "I have been taking zyrtec for over 3 years and it still does wonders for my allergies. I take it before I go to bed so try taking it before you go to sleep because it does cause you to be tired."

Morten P replied: "Actually drowsiness is not a common side effect with Zyrtec, which is is with Claritin, but a few might experience drowsiness with Zyrtec and it seems like you are one of them. It is two different active substances in the two drugs and people reacts differently on them - I would suggest that you try our Claritin - it works great for me. Talk to your doctor before doing so."

condosgirl replied: "I like Zyrtec and I usually take it right before bed at night. It seems like I'm less tired that way. The Zyrtec seems to work better than Claritin for me. I've heard other people say just the opposite. Claritin works well for my daughter. If the side effects of Zyrtec are bothering you, why not try the Claritin and see what happens?"

PrevMed replied: "I'm a Claritin fan myself... :)"

Diggity replied: "I use 12 hr Claritin - it snaps you awake! It sometimes works too well and drys out my sinuses. 24 hr Claritin makes me want to run circles and clean the whole house in less that an hour."

Does Zyrtec or Claritin work better as an allergy medicine? I've been taking Claritin as needed for my springtime allergies. It works ok but they are really bad this year. Some people have recommended taking Zyrtec. Does it work better?

gomagic! replied: "for me it does. also try zyrtec d."

vaesar replied: "The web said no side effects.Click here site:has all things"

sMITTstar replied: "I always found Claratyne a better alternative as it worked better and because Zertec made me break out in a rash, apparently I'm allergic to the fillers. It really depends on what works best for you, everyone is different. You could ask your chemist which one they recommend for you though. Hope this helps :) xx"

MidnightSun95 replied: "My sister takes Zyrtec for her allergies and it works really well for her. It usually depends on the person; different things work for different people."

Lisa M replied: "At one time I took Claritin when it was a pre ion. I had taken it for years and it stopped working all together. I have always had eye allergies. I have numerous allergies, environmental, food, etc.... and after I tried Zyrtec it was fantastic. I love it and it helps my eyes tremendously. My kids also take it and I get the generic version and feel it works the same. I was so worried when it went over the counter cause I had tried the Claritin and it did not help. Either my allergies changed or the meds itself was different. Now I will also say that NO pill can keep me from a flare up and especially cat dander, dust, dust mites, etc.... but this is the best and have even tried to go back to pre ion allegra and a couple other new ones and they still don't do what Zyrtec can do. And I am allergic/sensitive to lots of medicines out there also and that is why I cant take the D form of most meds cause it is way to strong and I end up vomiting. Hopefully you are not like myself and can take most meds without problems. Good Luck and Hope Zyrtec works for you as it does work for me and my kids."

What is the difference between singulair and zyrtec or claritin? I currently take Singulair which has not helped me even though it used to. I'm now experiencing itching when im out side and my body feels like its burning up all the time. Can Zyrtec or Claritin do the job that Singulair couldnt? or should i look elsewhere besides me allergies for the root of the problem thank you all

Tressa M replied: "check out my blog on How to control seasonal allergies and what meds that are good to take. For me I like Zyrtec. "

cuppycake1995 replied: "pre ion clarinex is better than all of those put together!!!"

it's me replied: "I take singular every day and every other day I take zyrtec. the zyrtec has helped a lot even though I take it every other day. I would recommend that. I have taken claritin before but it didnt really help me. Ask your doctor if you have any other questions."

How long does it take for Zyrtec or Claritin to work? I've been taking claritin for about a year now and it takes about 4 hours until most of my symptoms are gone. The Zyrtec commercial said their product works 2 HOURS FASTER! How long until zyrtec or claritin supposed to work?

RedheadMOMI replied: "zyertec 2 hours claritin 4 hours claritin lasts 14 hours zyertic lasts 18 hours"

Is Claritin or Zyrtec better for a Runny Nose? I have a really awful runny nose and allergies that I need to get rid of as soon as possible. Which one works better and faster to get rid of a stuffy nose- Zyrtec or CHILDREN'S Claritin (I'm 14 years old, so I don't know if I'd be considered a child and if the Children's Claritan would help me)? Thanks so much! :)

velvetrose replied: "if your 14 and have more than slight allergies children's claritan will do absolutely nothing at all for you when i was 7 i took full strength claritan and it did nothing for me go with zyrtec its WAYYYY stronger but the extra strength will make you drowsy for mamby the first week you take it after that you wont notice the drowsiness anymore also if you take it at night its good for helping you fall asleep :)"

Can I take Claritin with Zyrtec together? I am Currently on Claritin D 24 hours srterngth. I also have Zyrtec 24 hour strength. Can I take them together?

mrscooke@att.net replied: "No, they are both for the same thing and have a lot of the same things in them. If you take both you could end up getting worse... Try Zyrtec D. Clairitin has never worked for me."

Zyrtec, Claritin and Benedryl - What are the differences? I can't remember the ads from last year. My nose is clogged and I need to get to sleep. Which one am I supposed to take? Which ones make you drowsy? Which one doesn't? Which one takes a long time to work? Which one works the longest or the best?

Ronya replied: "Benedryl- makes you sleepy take only b4 bed claritin- takes longer to kick in but claritin d can be taken when ever zyrtec D- my personal fav. kicks in very quickly doesn't make me drowsy and takes away all my symptoms! good luck!"

dark_lillithca replied: "Different pharmaceutical families of drugs. Go to your pharmacist, don't ask people on message boards. All medication depends on your symptoms, the severity and the cause; nobody here can diagnose and treat you with any reliability."

Does Zyrtec work in the same way as Claritin? I read that Zyrtec is going to become available over the counter. I have been using Claritin since April 2007 for allergies (I just started suffering from allergies) and I was wondering if it was OK to switch to Zyrtec. Do they work in the same way? Are they for the same kind of allergies? Thanks for your answers.

JLVWG replied: "They are almost identical. Very similar..."

SU replied: "Yes, they are very similar. The only difference is that Zyrtec may have a tendency to make you sleepy (the doctor actually recommends that it be taken at night time because of that side effect) -- Claritin doesn't have that side effect. Other than that, they treat the same allergies in basically the same way."

curlyblackdragon replied: "They just have different active ingredients. The pharmacist told me that occasionally one type of active ingredient won't work for someone, so they can try the other brand, other than that there's no reason why Zyrtec won't work for you. Good luck with it."

Elizabeth Enjoli replied: "basically they are th same thing with different name brands... they are also basically the same thing as benedryl but dont work as well b/c the active ingredient that makes benedryl so darn good is the same thing that causes the drowsiness.... and zyrtec and claritin take that ingredient out..... i know this b/c i am in nursing school and you have to take pharmacology 1 & 2"

trish replied: "Yes they work very much in the same way. My doctor had me try both of them and said either one would be okay for me. For the Zyrtec worked better. For a friend of mine the Claritin works better. So, because they are so similar, it may just depend upon your own allergies and your body chemistry, etc. There is a generic store brand of the active ingredient of Claritin too. That can save some money. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about your particular allergies and what they might recommend."

JAJ replied: "I have actually taken both. Zyrtec did not work for me and also made me feel groggy. My general practise doctor prescribed this for me before I saw my allergy doctor. My allergy doctor actually told me that my allergies were too severe for Zyrtec and told me to take Clairtin. So I guess it may depend on how bad your allergies are."

Are there any long-term side effects from daily intake of allergy medications like Zyrtec or Claritin? I assume typical side effects listed on their websites are for first time users, but if I already got over the initial drowsiness and dry mouth, and have resigned to take allergy medicines a few times a week for the rest of my life, are there any known side effects I might suffer decades from now?

Wendall replied: "I'm not sure about the ones that you mentioned, but both me and my mom have been taking Allegra, and it's a very good medication for allergies (me and her are allergic to like, everything, and that's what we take). And I don't think we have any problems that are long term. We've been using these medications for years. Ask your doctor about the medcations you take, that'll get you a for-sure answer."

Temperance replied: "I've never experienced any (and I've been taking them for a good ten years). The only problem is, you can build up a tolerance to the drugs over time. Basically none of the OTC brands work for me anymore."

What works best for you?? Claritin, Zyrtec or Benadryl?? Please someone all I want is sleep!? I haven't had sleep in about a week, my dr. said that I have a viral infection (it's like the flu and will last anywhere from 6-8 weeks) She said that I should take an antihistamine to dry me up. I've tried Claritin and it doesn't seem to do anything for me. Please any advice would help, all I want is sleep!!

nikki n replied: "Claritin. I would also try some sort of Nyquil or something."

cbm replied: "try taking two Benadryl. it always makes me sleepy."

**bombshelb replied: "its not an antihistamine but nyquil always knocks me right out!"

la.koto replied: "Benadryl really knocks me out, but if you're sick you should try Nyquil. That is sure to make you feel better and get you some sleep!"

Lynn replied: "I tried all three and Zyrtec is the only one that made a difference for me. Sadly, it was the last one I tried.. Hope you feel better soon. Have you tried one of the over the counter PM cold meds? It may just help."

Zeep replied: "Benadryl is the most effective, but also has the strongest side effect - sleepiness. Claritin doesn't make you sleepy and is slightly less effective as an antihistamine. Seems like Benadryl might solve both your problems."

Adrianarawwr replied: "benadryl, will knock you out ;D"

wiifan117 replied: "For sleep and antihistamine purposes - Benadryl is the best! I've used it to dry me up, as well as a sleep aid when I feel fine. :) Claritin is OK, but it doesn't do much for me, and Zyrtec is non-drowsy I think. I would try Benadryl - and you can buy the store brand, get double the pills, for half the price, and it still works great :)"

bwil415 replied: "if you have taken ibuprofen then as your doctor about xyzal or zyrtec benadryl is fast but it tastes bad and you have to take it many times a day. unlike zryec wich is once daily"

marta.kosmyna replied: "Zyrtec is really good for allergies, but benadryl makes me more sleepy then it actually helps. try nyquil"

leighlutz replied: "There is no one fit, everybody is different. Try Zyrtec, if that doesn't work try benedryl. There is a different antihistimine in Nyquil also. good luck."

BW replied: "Benadryl is known for making people drowsy, but studies show it's bad for your brain activity. I think Zyrtec and Claritin are non-drowsy. The best choice would be Sudafed; they have multiple formulas so you can choose the one that's best for your symptoms."

chefholly14 replied: "try the benadryl it makes me drowsy but DO NOT TAKE MORE THAN 2 PILLS taking more than 2 actually will keep you awake and make you all pent up and edgy too it says so right on the package"

K.C. replied: "NyQuil always always gives me the best night sleep but out of the 3 you've named I've had Benadryl and that worked for me too but nothing like NyQuil to get my ZZZ's!!"

kle_sam replied: "Do you live in Canada or in the States? If you live in the States: The law changed about 5 or so years ago, and now all medicines that actually WORK for bad congestion are kept behind the counter where the pharmacist is. You don't need a pre ion to get them, but you do need to ask for them and show ID and sign a form. So go see the pharmacist and ask her what she recommends. If you live in Canada: There is an amazing nasal mist medicine called Drixoral. It is in a silver box. It is more expensive than other nasal mists, but TRUST ME it is worth it! It will help you breath, help your sinus headache, help everything! Good luck!"

Cake Batter replied: "After I take 2 benadryl I'm out for the night. It works so well. I find that if I'm taking it because I want to sleep I get SO happy when it starts to kick in."

sparkle and shine replied: "Benadryl always works the best for me. The others have never done any thing for me. It makes me tierd when i take it so it's perfect."

superman71 replied: "when i'm sick i take tylenol pm it has benadryl and tylenol, benadryl for the antihistamine and tylenol for the aches and pains. Also get a humidifier with some vicks vapo steam and that will help keep your nasal passages moist. I guarantee it will make all the difference."
