Why is it generally advised to avoid taking effexor with adderall? My doctor prescribed me 40 mg/day adderall IR and told me to take the sample packets of Effexor XR, but drugs.com says there's a "major drug drug interaction" with effexor and both ingredients of adderall and that you should "generally avoid." Why? And should I take the effexor or not (I already took it twice, got nauxous and anxious and my heart was temporarily 126 beats per minute up from usual 108).
The doctor didn't even remember that he'd prescribed me adderall a month ago until I reminded him at the very end and he wrote a new pre ion. So.... I'm just wanting some second opinions. And maybe a reason for the "major drug drug interaction"?
brennie replied: "Check out subjects on the web such as alternative medicine and pharmaceutical drug reactions. It is your body and a person's health is their personal responsibility-not the doctor's."
KellyJean replied: "adderall is speed.......your heart rate will increase and its advised to stay away from because its highly addictive, and can cause heart problems. which with your heartrate going up that fast you should go back to your doc and tell him. this is not safe. and HIGHLY addictive... i take it and with out it im mean mean mean. effexor is for depression. sometimes adderall can cause this. especially when you are taking this and miss your dose. adderall is to treat adhd and add. i think taking a depressant and a speed is highly dangerous! please be careful."

Drs definitely need to be more careful when prescribing meds...Good luck to ya"
solver replied: "Adderall raises levels of dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin.
Efexor raises levels of noradrenalin and serotonin.
Raised dopamine, particularly in the mesolimbic areas of the brain, can lead to mania, and even psychoses.
Noradrenalin is the body's chief mediator for raising blood pressure and pulse, as well as raising sweating, anxiety, and other symptoms that may feel like nausea.
High levels of serotonin can lead to serotonin syndrome, which is basically a combination of cognitive, somatic and autonomic effects, ranging from, say, headache, diahorrea and tremors, to hallucinations, hypertension and violent muscle spasms.
I am no expert, but I wouldn't recommend mixing them, or sticking with a doctor who forgets things like that!"
cough relief for effexor users My mother currently takes effexor, and is suffering from a pretty bad dry cough. She went to get some cough syrup at the pharm and was told she couldn't use that stuff because of the drug interaction. Just wondering what other effexor users use when they have a nasty cough associated with a cold? She's unable to reach her family doctor so was just wondering what some safe options are for her.
Thanks a bunch!

Does anyone take both Effexor XR and Seroquel? My mom is taking both Effexor XR and Seroquel. She takes 200 mg Seroquel at night and we are working up to 75 mg of Effexor in the morning. I recently read about drug interactions and heart problems when taking both of these drugs together. Does anyone else have information on that? Are they safe to take together? Also, she is experiencing nausea and some dizziness. Does this go away? Thanks.
Oreo replied: "If she got both meds from the same pharmacy, they would have told her if there was drug interaction between the two. I do know that Effexor is hard to wean off, and Seroquel increases the risk of diabetes.
I would talk to her doctor about the side effects she's experiencing (nausea and dizziness).
Hope this helps!"
startrektosnewenterpriselovethem replied: "I did 300mg Seroquel and 225 mg of Effexor XR, my psychiatrist is really careful of drug interactions because I have many other health problems and I have had no problems.
Take the Effexor with a meal (I take it with dinner)
Take the Seroquel with a snack if it is causing problems
(I have changed from Seroquel to Abilify because Seroquel made me too sleepy during the day)"
Sue E replied: "Hi, I take both - I am trying to reduce the amount - I was taking 200mg Seroquel but have gone back to 100mg at night - I missed a tablet the other night and hardly slept - so I suppose it will be back to sleeping tablets if I go off completely. The only side effects I have are that I am always tired. I am now taking 75mg of Effexor - I've had no side effects except a little dizziness when I first started, but nothing else (I was taking 150mg for a while) but I think I will go off this too. I was on Zyprexa for a while but put on a lot of weight - so changed to Seroquel and I'm back to my pretty normal weight - does your Mom know why she is taking these drugs? I don't really understand why I am!"
solitary_mariner replied: "Well i take 300mg of Effexor in the mornings and a stilnox and 100mg of Seroquel at night and also take Nexium to stop the nausea, it's totally killed my appetite......... i have to force myself to eat, my blood pressure has gone thru the roof, i always feel hot even in the middle of winter.....who needs a doona?........ i occasionally get a dialated pupil........ wait until the tremor and headaches kick in then your mum will realise what a demon of a drug this is ........ despite it's benefits and the fact that it is stopped me getting more ECT i question the wisdom in taking this drug at all due to the horrendus side effects .............. good luck"
Pre ion drug interactions? I take Effexor XR and was prescribed Imitrex for migraines. I would like to know the best site to look for information about possible interactions between the 2 medications.

Subject: Sumatriptan with SSRIs
I am concerned about the potential interaction between sumatriptan (5-HT-1 agonist) and the SSRIs. In particular, I have a patient on sertraline 250 mg...
--Holly A. Swartz, M.D.
I have several patients who take both SSRIs and sumatriptan, and despite the theoretical concern about precipitating a serotonin syndrome, I have not seen anything like that occur. None of them are on a comparable dose, however."
Is my mom's doctor putting her at risk for a heart attack? I have always been pretty knowledegable when it comes to drug interactions, but I am not a trained physician.
My mom has been on medication for high blood pressure for some time now. She also has high hormone levels. She more recently was prescribed Effexor. Even more recently her doctor has prescribed Adderall. I just do not understand why a doctor would prescribe a stimulant to someone who is taking medicine to control high blood pressure.
Does this sound right?
versantly replied: "your mother can either get a 2nd opinion or talk to her current doctor about her concerns. go with her to the appointment."
littleelttilmik replied: "Get her blood pressure measured regularly. Does she have narcolepsy or something ? I'm a pharmacist and I've never seen the combination of an amphetamine and effexor although I guess it would in some way be synergistic in depression that is due to lack of adrenaline/noradrenalin
*****ps***
Sure the pharmacy read the doctors handwriting correctly ? It sometimes happens . Check it out cos the pharmacy will be grateful to you for spotting anything wrong early as possible"
Mellitus replied: "The adderall is definitely worrying Doctors are not infallible"
Mathieu replied: "Yes taking Effexor alone can increase BP and Adderall can very easily cause higher BP and together they could synergize and really up her BP.
A lot depends on the dose of Effexor and Adderall. Also what are they prescribed for. Effexor is for depression and sometimes anxiety, Adderall is for ADHD, sleeping disorders (narcolepsy, primary hypersomnia), weight loss, and depression (as a last resort or with a comorbid sleeping disorder). Use for weight loss and depression are 'off label' but they are typically considered to be acceptable in certain situations.
So really everything would depend on specifics. If her BP is moderately elevated the risk is not as high. She does need to check her BP at home daily (or even two or three times daily) and you might go along with her to the doctor and be an advocate. People often go to the doctor and don't ask important questions or do not know what they NEED to ask. So that might be a roll for you- I am sure your mum would appreciate it. And if you do get the feeling that the doctor is a stupid hack then a second opinion is good. Also, if the Adderall is for any psych problem (including sleep) she needs to see a psychiatrist.
But Effexor + Adderall + a high BP medication is unusual but it might be acceptable.
Good luck if you have questions feel free to ask"
Is it safe or unsafe to take adderral and/or tranzene when I'm taking st. John's Wort (sp?)??? I take adderall (10 mg twice a day) for ADD and lo dose tranzene (3.75 mg 2-3 times per day) as needed for anxiety. I started taking St John's wort about three days ago with these meds because I have chronic depression but cannot tolerate side effects of any of the ssri's (I've tried at least ten meds for depression over the last 15 yrs). The SJW already seems to be helping my mood but I've been getting this weird sensation that feels like numb, tingly brain zaps. They come and go thru the day. It's the same feeling I got when I was withdrawing from effexor and others have described the same experience with effexor. Anyway, I asked my pharmacist and she said she didn't know about drug herb interactions which I find shocking since supplements and herbs are such a huge business, and isn't that her responsibility/job anyway???? : ( I would like to know if these zaps are from the SJW itself or if they're a result of mixing it with these two meds & is the mixture unsafe? Thanks Much..
spiderhedron replied: "You should call your shrink/doctor Monday and ask him about these "brain zaps" and what could be causing them. Tell or remind this doc that you also take SJW along with what s/he prescribes. I'm not qualified to answer your suggestion, but whoever prescribed your adderall and tranzene should be."
Susas replied: "Don't take St. John's Wort. It isn't worth it."
Lea replied: "St. John's Wort should not be taken with any other medications without guidance from your doctor/pharmacist. It interacts with about half the medications in the market place. It causes certain drugs to become inactive quicker."

jannsody replied: "I would ask your pharmacist about possible drug interactions as well as taking herbal supplements such as St. John's Wort."
goldtyger replied: "The active ingredient in St John worth is an old antidepressant, a chemical of the Monoamine inhibition type, the MAOI are no longer use because they cause hypertensive crisis with many types of food like cheese, wine, an a list to long to post here. They were substituted for a 2 generation type of antidepressant call tricyclics and they were also replace by 3rd generation antidepressants called SSRI like celexa, lexapro, zoloft, etc
St John does not cause more news with clinical sideffects because it has a very small amount of MAOI. In your case taking adderall is a no no. stop taking the St John and go talk to the physician prescribing the adderall to also do a complete evaluation of your conditions and manage you symptoms of severe depression. Your physician should be a specialist, a board certified psychiatrist
OIs or drugs that possess MAO-inhibiting activity, such as furazolidone, linezolid, or procarbazine, can prolong and intensify the cardiac stimulation and vasopressor effects of amphetamines. Phenelzine and tranylcypromine appear to produce the greatest risk since these two MAOIs also have intrinsic amphetamine-like activity. In the presence of MAOIs, amphetamines induce severe cardiovascular and cerebrovascular responses. Selegiline, an inhibitor of MAO type B, may also predispose to this reaction. Amphetamines should not be administered during or within 14 days following the use of MAOIs or drugs with MAO-inhibiting activity."
Are there any averse interactions between the following drugs vitamins and supplements? I'm taking Effexor XR, Seroquel and Neurontin and I'm considering taking Acetyl-L Carnitine and COQ10 together, I also take a multivitamin Fish Oil and Vitamin B - 100 Complex and B12 supplements.
ravin_lunatic replied: "How many doctors do you have anyway? Shouldn't your doctor KNOW? The last ones you named are just vitamin stuff and are ko to take together with the other things. But I have no clue what Neurontin is. If I wanted to know though, I would go to WIKIPEDIA! Or.. drugstore.com.. You can compare all those drugs you take and find out if your fit to take even MORE! ckngbbbls replied: "your pharmacist will be happy to answer that question for you. Call the drug store where you get your pre ions and ask to speak to the pharmacist or go directly to the drug store."
New antidepressant and need "second opinions" here? About four weeks ago, I started a new antidepressant called Pristiq; overall since then, my anxiety has gotten worse. I read the insert and anxiety and irritability would be some of the expected side effects. Now for the past eight months I've been on the birth control pill and this is what I've been noticing: I started taking the Pristiq during the week that I was on my sugar pills, and I started feeling good and better and more motivated; It wasn't until the Sunday when I went back on my active birth control pills that hell broke loose...I started getting more irritable, and my boyfriend and I been having more shouting matches and agruments, I've been crying a lot more, and even started to physically hurt myself and started drinking.
Now, I'm also going through a rough patch in my life: I'm looking for a better job since my current job is cutting back on hours (would rather not go into detail about that because I'm embarrassed about where I work at) and the feelings that I'm not good enough for my boyfriend since I don't have a better job yet. Been putting out resumes and applications. Bottom line: A GOOD PAYING JOB DEFINES WHO I AM. Really disturbing, I have been getting pleasure out of physically punching and smacking myself, and been shouting in my car and hyperventalating.
I took this worsened anxiety up with my doctor today and said that the Pristiq could be to blame and that it could be interacting with the type of birth control I'm taking. She said that there shouldn't be any interaction between the two and strongly suggested for me to go to a therapist. She even tried putting me back on Effexor, which I vow never to take again.
Frustrated with my doctor, I sought a second opinion with the pharmacist at Walgreens; he told me that there's a good chance that I don't tolerate Pristiq very well, and that maybe I should give it some more time, and that my birth control shouldn't be the cause of my heightened anxiety.
If this is the case then why did I still get worsened feelings of anxiety with the Pristiq when I went back on my active week of birth control pills? I have a feeling that there's some degree of interaction with Pristiq and birth control. Are drug companies not saying something here or has been even heavily researched yet??
Stephen replied: "Prisiq is the active metabolite of Efexor. So if you can't take Efexor then there is a good chance that presig will do the same. Talk to your doc about changing antidepressants to something not related.
Also you job does not define you what kind of a person you are does. Some CBT might be useful to get you to believe this."
sweetiepie replied: "Sounds like hormones, my dear, hormones. You need to either change your birth control pill or change anti-depressants, as obviously these two are not a good combination for you. I went through every one in the book before I found an antidepressant that worked for me. So if you're not willing to go back on Effexor (ironically, the ONLY one that worked for me) then there are many others that you can try but you may have to be patient to find one that works for you. Bummer, I know but you have symptoms that cannot be ignored, especially if you are harming yourself. The drug companies cannot possibly test every drug on the market with the one they are going to market so many interactions are not known until reported by the medical community, If your symptoms are worse, then that's your clue. You did a great job of picking that up so stand your ground and go back to your doctor. You are not limited to one drug these days so tell her this combo is not working and you need to try something different. If she doesn't listen, you need a different doctor. Fortunately, mine listened to me and is awesome."
Valerie replied: "I started taking Pristiq this past May. I had also stopped taking my birth control a few months previous. Last month, I started my birth control again and everything was fine. Then, I got my first period back on the pill, and it's been a downward spiral since. I DEFINITELY think Pristiq does not interact with birth control. I can't get out of bed, I have never been depressed and I feel hopeless. I was given Pristiq for anxiety, not depression, but now it seems I am very depressed."
Lea replied: "Irritability can be a side effect of Pristiq; along with anxiety, depression, mania, and suicidality. If you had problems with Effexor, there is a decent chance you'll have problems with Pristiq because Pristiq is the active form of Effexor.
I found no evidence that birth control interacts with either Effexor or Pristiq.
I recommend that you switch anti-depressants.
I cannot see why inherently birth control pills and Pristiq would interact."
I'm having IV Sedation for oral surgery tomorrow and I'm terrified? I went to the dentist on May 19th because the lower left side of my jaw was pulsating, sore, and swollen. I explained that I have a normally high heart rate, but I forgot to tell them about how my mother and sister have to take antibiotics before going to the dentist. Anyway, the dentist referred me to an oral surgeon the same day, and I explained that I am a very nervous person, and that I am afraid of vomit and diarrhea. I also told him about the local shot they gave me four years ago that made my heart race. According to both the dentist and oral surgeon, my root tips need to come out because they are exposed and that's all that's left. The oral surgeon needs to cut into the gum, and has recommended IV sedation where I'm knocked out. I need two IV units. In addition to all that, I also forgot to tell anyone about the fact that when I was in the hospital with pneumonia and asthma problems, I was given some sort of IV medication that made my heart rate speed up so high that the hospital had to bring in a heart specialist. Plus, I've been taking Clindamycin as prescribed by the dentist, 1 150mg pill 3 times a day for a week, and I will have a few left come tomorrow at 8:45am - the time of my surgery. I started out taking one a day at the beginning because my stomach is torn up as it is from worrying, but I've been taking 3 a day since Sunday (although I think I forgot a dose yesterday). I was told by the oral surgeon to not eat for eight hours prior to surgery, but take any medication as needed with little water. Taking that antiobiotic on an empty stomach could cause my to get sick during surgery! To top it all off, I'm a heavy sleeper, and I'm worried about not waking up from the IV. I'm also worried about my body being allergic to whatever's in the IV and I won't know it, or that I'll have a heart attack or cardiac arrest. I'm also afraid of how I'll be when waking up - my boyfriend is driving so that's taken care of. I'm concerned about the amount of pain I'll be in.
With all that said, I am seriously petrified. There are so many things on my mind. I take 150mg of Effexor per day, after dinner. I used to take Tenormin (25mg), BuSpar (20mg), and Protonix for GERD (40mg). I stopped taking all except the Effexor because I stopped seeing my doctor, but was taking Tylenol PM at night for the past several months because I wasn't able to get to a dentist and was in pain. The last night I took that was 5/26.
Basically, I am freaking out, and have been feeling on the verge of a nervous breakdown since 5/19. I'm worried about dying, puking, waking up in a hospital bed, etc. the list goes on. With all that said, and less than 24 hours until my possible fate of doom, should I be worried? Are there any drugs in particular that could produce a negative interaction with IV sedation? Am I going to be alright? I couldn't think to ask these questions because I was a nervous wreck on 5/19!
The oral surgeon knows the majority of what I've written, just a couple of things I forgot because I was extremely nervous!
essentiallysolo replied: "print out this post of yours, take it with you and let the oral surgeon calm your fears, it is his job to do so."
Teddy replied: "tell them your problem....im sure the dentist will reconsider.....maybe juss give u laughing gas instead....who knows...juss tlk 2 him n things will work out"
Karen replied: "It's normal to be nervous but you really seem to be in a panic. I'm sure everything will be fine so try not to worry. My daughter went to an oral Surgeon last week to have her wisdom teeth removed and she's fine. She was in some pain the first day or so. They prescribed a pain killer but after the first day all she needed was just Advil.
This is easy to say but I know I would be nervous also. All I can say is try to stay calm. It will be over soon and we can get back to answering each other questions again...lol"
great grandad.eric. replied: "Dear Becky, i know exactly how you feel.I have been there. A few years ago i had all my teeth removed, they were in very poor condition, and i was terrified. The dentist said unless i calmed down he could not continue. Finally i did,and every thing went well. I felt awful ,and embarrassed about my actions. He assured me it happens often. They are used to dealing with that problem. If you feel you can not explain your feelings to them, write it all down so they can read it, they will understand.Hyper Ventilation they call it. The good news is, when it was all over i did not feel a thing. BTW,at the time i was 63, and i thought i should know better.SO, if its possible, try not to distress your self,it makes things worse..Also take a list of all your medication with you. Cheer up,,GOD BLESS."
