About Naproxen And Aspirin in Answers
what is the difference between aspirin and naproxen? i know they are both used to control mild joint pains, but how are they different? or, more so, why would you use one instead of the other? does one have an advantage?

hello kitty replied: "get the boxes and compare the ingredients, side affects"

taylortumbl replied: "good question- i dont know the scientific explanation, but naproxen heals joint pain a lot quicker!"

Mel replied: "Naproxen is specifically an anti inflammatory, aspirin is not. Different "active" ingredients in the two"

alexhappygirl@rocketmail.com replied: "They both are anti-inflammatory drugs, but naproxen is also considered to be an NSAID (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug) The effects of Aspirin: In addition to its ability to relieve inflammation, it can reduce fever, soothe pain, and prevent blood clotting. But because it can also provoke a number of undesirable side effects in some people, aspirin, though not an exotic drug, should still be used with care. Like aspirin, NSAIDs reduce inflammation by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins. Among the NSAIDs now available are sulindac (Clinoril), ibuprofen (Motrin, Rufen, Advil, Nuprin), fenoprofen (Nalfon), naproxen (Naprosyn, Anaprox, Aleve), etodolac (Lodine), flurbiprofen (Ansaid), piroxicam (Feldene), phenylbutazone (Butazolidin), diclofenac (Voltaren), ketoprofen (Orudis), oxaproxin (Daypro), and nabumetone (Relafen). Originally thought to have relatively few side effects, NSAIDs have been considered a promising alternative to corticosteroids in the treatment of arthritis. It now appears, however, that the doses of NSAIDs necessary to relieve arthritis pain can lead to ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding in some people. Other side effects can include rashes, wheezing, headaches, mental status changes, liver dysfunction, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and elevations in blood pressure. There is also some evidence that the NSAID ibuprofen can trigger asthma attacks and may possibly damage kidneys if taken together with diuretics (drugs that promote fluid loss). Despite the potential side effects, NSAIDs overall are still often preferable to other antiinflammatory drugs. Ibuprofen, sold in both pre ion and nonpre ion forms, is a good alternative to aspirin and acetaminophen in alleviating pain, fever, menstrual cramps, arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions. The same can be said for naproxen sodium (Naprosyn), a longer-acting NSAID which has become available over the counter in the form of Aleve."

What do you do when you can't take aspirin, Ibuprofen or Naproxen for aches and pains.? I have terrible reflux for which I take Prilosec. But it doesn't control the bad action after taking aspirin, etc. I take Tylenol now, but am afraid of liver damage. I feel others have this problem too, and would like to know how they are handeling it. Thanks in advance.

Chali replied: "Go to the doctor and get a pre ion medication."

saucylatina replied: "This is something for your doctor to answer since everybody is different and their reaction to something may not be the same as you."

check_ur_info_FIRST replied: "If the aches and pains are a daily thing, please go to your doctor and find out what the problem is. If it's only occasional aches and pains, and you take tylenol a couple of times a week, then there is no harm at all. It's really only a problem if you take maximum doses (or more) every single day and you are not being monitored by your doctor."

When bitten by a spider why should ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen be avoided? Some sources say that these particular ingredients should be avoided....however...some remedies say that it is safe to take aspirin and such pain killers for mild pain...which is confusing. Which one should I believe (and why)?

Inundated in SF replied: "Well, I know that aspirin and ibuprofen thin the blood to allow it to circulate more freely so that might be a reason to avoid taking them if you've got snake venom in your blood system. It's also possible that snake antidote clashes or gets neutralized."

abberz274 replied: "You should not take asprin or ibuprofen because it is a blood thinner, thus making your blood easier to circulate so the venom would in turn circulate faster. You can however take tylanol to ease the pain because it doesn't thin your blood."

daniel g replied: "The above reps are accurate, but pain inflicted from common spider bites is usually not so severe as to warrant aspirins or pain killers. the best treatment (in general) is to wash with soap/water and apply a topical antibiotic ointment to help prevent infection. Ice will relieve swelling, and an aloe based lotion will help the itch. bite symptoms not diminishing after 48 hr,may be from a poisonous spider/insect,(or not a bite at all) and should be looked at by a doctor to determine if treatment is needed. if you have allergies, elderly,or are in poor health, you should have this looked at by a doctor in any event."

Naproxen vs. Aspirin vs. Motrin? I had a very severe allergic reaction to Naproxen. Now, when I take Motrin or Aspirin, I have similar symptoms. Are these medications in any way the same? My symptoms are that I get tightness in my throat and some dizziness. I don't have stomach problems when taking the medication.

shewrites replied: "They are all anti-inflammatories. Naproxen and Motrin are more similar in that they are both non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Aspirin is a salicylate and plant-based in origin. All of these drugs have the potential to irritate your stomach with prolonged use. You don't describe what type of reaction you're having, but if you're experiencing digestive problems you might want to try an enteric (coated) aspirin, or at least make sure you're taking your medication with food and plenty of water. Edit: from your de ion it does seem like an allergic reaction. Tell your doctor so you can find out if that is the case and so you can get a pre ion for another medication for pain relief."

Tazer replied: "Yes. These medications are all Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). Naproxen (Aleve), Aspirin, and Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) all decrease pain and inflammation by inhibiting the same enzyme in your body. It is possible that you are allergic to all NSAIDs. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is a pain reliever that is not an NSAID. If you are taking a medication for moderate pain, you should try tylenol. If you need a medication to reduce inflammation or reduce clotting, talk to a doctor about pre ion medication options."

Does Naproxen Sodium contain aspirin? It's pre ion Naproxen Sodium (generic for Anaprox ds) 550 mg. I take it for severe menstrual cramps, however I am going for surgery in 4 days and am not supposed to take anything containing aspirin? Thanks in advance, hope you can help!!

Paul B replied: "IMPORTANT: It doesn't, but your surgeon still needs to be aware that you are taking it. And YOU should not be getting your information about anything this important from anonymous amateurs like me who don't know anything about you. ASK YOUR DOCTOR."

emmalazarus2 replied: "Naproxen does not contain aspirin, which is acetylsalicylic acid. But you probably still should not take it before a surgery. Definitely call your surgeon's office and get their advice. And I wish you good health and a quick recovery. Emma"

Pangolin replied: "It doesn't contain aspirin, but like aspirin, it can impair coagulation. Call your surgeon."

Aspirin, Ibuprofen and naproxen are all believed to target cyclooxygenase.? What are the similarities in the chemical structure of these drugs?

white_bread86 replied: "- All 3 of them have at least 1 benzene ring - All 3 of them also have a carboxylic acid (COOH) group somewhere in their structure. A carboxylic acid group is a carbon which is double bonded to an oxygen atom but also single bonded to an -OH group."
